University of Sydney student Steph Swanson was there as the cage caught on fire. She told Honi Soit she saw flames and smoke bursting from the crane, before calling 000.

At 10am, the arm of the crane collapsed, falling onto the construction site and causing major property damage. Honi Soit obtained footage of the destruction as it happened. A warning, the video contains coarse language.

About a thousand people have been evacuated from the site, amid fears fuel has leaked from the crane.

Police have closed all lanes of George Street city bound at Mountain Street and westbound at Abercrombie Street.
