In a podcast episode recorded via Zoom in 2021, USyd Professor Emerita Bronwyn Winter made a number of transphobic comments against Sargeant.
“USyd is not safe. It is not safe for survivors, it is not safe for women and gender diverse people,” SRC Education Officer Ishbel Dunsmore said.
The action was organised by activists at USyd, UTS and Macquarie University.
Feminist activists spoke out against rape culture and systemic lack of support for survivors as universities await the results of the 2021 National Student Safety Survey due for release tomorrow.
“The University [of Melbourne] is first and foremost the ones who allow people to be on campus, and allowed him to come back. It starts with the University and ends with the University,” Sinead Fernandes said.
Organised by the USyd Women’s collective, the protest took aim at ongoing sexual violence on campus and at colleges.
