At 1pm on Tuesday May 14, students from the Gaza solidarity encampment marched down Eastern Avenue to the Australian Centre for Field Robotics (ACFR) in protest of a new engineering scholarship funded by weapons manufacturer Thales.
Day 17 at the University of Sydney’s Gaza solidarity encampment saw participation in the Student Strike for Palestine and attendance at the National Tertiary Education Union’s (NTEU) Sydney Branch vote on a motion to “endorse the institutional academic boycott of Israeli universities, and to cut ties with the war industry.”
After marching from the USyd Quadrangle to the UTS Central Building, the rally escalated. Following the speeches, students stormed Broadway and occupied the Broadway Shopping Centre.
The rally was organised by activist groups Students Against War and UTS Staff for Palestine, and called for USyd and UTS to cut their ties with Israel and arms manufacturers.
When asked for comment, a spokesperson from the University informed Honi Soit that “the safety of our community is our first priority. The University’s current travel advice is ‘do not travel’ to Israel so this unit isn’t available.”
Whilst some have the luxury to forget – or at least attempt to – others pass it down through intergenerational trauma because they cannot, and will not, forget.
