The USU has announced Jania Jancu has been appointed as the new USU CEO, with her term starting in January next year.
Jancu replaces Michael Bromley who was appointed in April on a six month contract after the resignation of Andrew Mills.
Before her role as ReachOut Australia’s Director of Operations, Jancu was UNSW’s Scholarship Manager and served on the University’s Board between 2010 and 2012. She was also Chief of Staff to Lucy Turnbull during her term as Lord Mayor of Sydney.
USU President Bryson Constable (Liberal) told Honi Soit he was confident in her experience leading commercial, government, and not-for-profit organisations. “Her passion for making a meaningful impact on the community, combined with her extensive expertise, makes her the ideal leader to guide USU toward a successful future,” he said.
When asked why Bromley’s contract was not renewed, an option the USU Board had, Constable said “Michael was employed as an interim CEO, not full-time CEO, and thus was not to be considered for the full-time role.”
Bromley has worked closely with Constable and Vice President Ben Hines (Libdependent) on the union’s controversial incorporation plan which is on track to be completed by the next USU election.
Incorporation requires the USU to renegotiate their affiliation agreement with the University. Jancu’s experience negotiating the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute’s affiliation agreement with UNSW was key to her appointment.
Honi understands that Jancu was a choice widely accepted across an increasingly politically divided Board.
Constable told Honi that Bromley would assist in the changeover, “we are fortunate to have Michael and Janina working closely together throughout January to ensure a seamless leadership transition.”
