The Faculty of Medicine currently has an exchange program with Israeli Institute of Technology – Technion – in occupied Palestine, the institute behind the D9 bulldozers used to demolish stolen Palestinian neighbourhoods and hide graves in Gaza.
The rally was set to march to the USyd Gaza solidarity encampment, however, protesters were forced to alter their route due to threats of campus bans.
After the massive turnout at the University of Queensland SGM, the USyd students maintained an invigorated ambition to combat the disconnect between management agenda and student interest.
The art-making followed a small rally organised by Students For Palestine in front of the Quadrangle. Together, these two events christened the encampment occurring on Tuesday night in solidarity with the student protesters of Columbia University, who are facing police arrests en masse at their sit-ins.
In an open letter, civil rights organisations have called for the government to repeal “anti-democratic” NSW anti-protest laws, or failing that, introduce “a community consultation component into the statutory review of the 2022 amendments.”
The rally was organised by activist groups Students Against War and UTS Staff for Palestine, and called for USyd and UTS to cut their ties with Israel and arms manufacturers.
At the rally, S.A.W. member Jacob Starling, a participant of the sit-in, announced to the crowd “This campus supports Palestine. The student body supports Palestine. There is no room for apartheid on this campus.”
