Step aside New York Times: Honi’s “best” books of the 21st century

It is 2024, and the New York Times Book Review has published their list of 100 Best Books of the 21st Century. They compiled the list by asking famed writers to provide a list of their favourite books. But do the most-lauded writers pen the best books? And where is the literature from marginalised voices?

We acknowledge the traditional custodians of this land, the Gadigal people of the Eora Nation. As students and journalists, we recognise our complicity in the ongoing colonisation of Indigenous land. In recognition of our privilege, we vow to not only include, but to prioritise and centre the experiences of Indigenous people, and to be reflective when we fail to be a counterpoint to the racism that plagues the mainstream media.
