“If you don’t care about Palestine, then you don’t care about women’s rights”: Twenty second week of Palestine protests in Sydney

Palestine Action Group hosted their 23rd week of straight protests against the ongoing Israeli invasion on Gaza on Sunday March 10. The rally comes as Israel has defied the United States and other allies by continuing its ground invasion of Rafah.

Palestine Action Group hosted their 22rd week of straight protests against the ongoing Israeli invasion on Gaza on Sunday March 10. The rally comes as Israel has defied the United States and other allies by continuing its ground invasion of Rafah.

Metal bowls and spoons were handed out to attendees who were directed to “make some noise against the forced starvation of millions of Gazans by the terrorist state of Israel!”
Palestinian activists Assala Sayara and Jana Fayyad co-chaired this week’s rally which coincided with International Women’s Day celebrations. Fayyad introduced a new chant of “If you don’t care about Palestine, then you don’t care about women’s rights”.
Mourning the Flour Massacre of 29 February 2024, this woman donned a bloodied apron saying “ceasefire now.” She said that she was cooking with flour during the attack of starving Gazans, highlighting the unjust parallels between citizens of the so-called peaceful Western imperial countries, and the vulnerable people of Palestine.

A variety of South African, Irish and Scottish flags stood out in their expression of solidarity against apartheid and colonisation. They accompanied a new chant of “we don’t want your two states, we want all of ‘48,” referencing the pre-colonial borders of Palestine before Israel announced its independence in 1948.
BDS Australia attended the rally with QR codes linking to their new form that provides people with information on how to check if their superfund is supporting apartheid Israel. Those who fill out the form will receive an email with instructions, with the aim of forcing superfunds to divest from Israel.

Palestine Action Group will continue their weekly protests at Hyde Park this Sunday March 17.

We acknowledge the traditional custodians of this land, the Gadigal people of the Eora Nation. The University of Sydney – where we write, publish and distribute Honi Soit – is on the sovereign land of these people. As students and journalists, we recognise our complicity in the ongoing colonisation of Indigenous land. In recognition of our privilege, we vow to not only include, but to prioritise and centre the experiences of Indigenous people, and to be reflective when we fail to be a counterpoint to the racism that plagues the mainstream media.
