NSW Police are conducting an operation on campus after a threat has caused multiple buildings to be evacuated.
In the last two hours, Fisher Library, the New Law Building, and the Abercrombie Business School have all been evacuated with students moved a safe distance from all the buildings.
Some students on the Quad lawns were also instructed to move to the other side of the lawn to maintain a safe distance from the Library.
A member of campus security initially told Honi that this was a preplanned drill, however the University and Police have confirmed there is an operation.
In a statement to Honi, a University of Sydney spokesperson confirmed there was a police operation ongoing but would not comment on the specific nature of the threat.
“As soon as we became aware of a threat made, we immediately contacted NSW Police who attended campus. Fisher Library and the Law Building have been evacuated as a precautionary measure and staff and students were advised to temporarily avoid the area until NSW Police operations are complete.”
NSW Police are also patrolling other campus buildings with police presence at The Regiment and the Darlington House.
In an email to residents Accommodation Operations said “We are aware there is a Police operation impacting student accommodation.” Just before 4pm in the afternoon, students were asked to return to their rooms and not leave the building or use any common areas for 10 minutes.
A representative from NSW Police also did not confirm the nature of the operation but advised in a statement that there was an exclusion zone in place and that the community was advised to avoid the area.
NSW Police did not confirm if student accommodations had been locked down or why certain buildings were involved in the operation.
Update:
As of 6pm the University has released a statement on social media and emailed students informing them the police operation on campus has concluded and that all buildings and campus activity has returned to normal
The University has also informed students that if their classes were impacted the special considerations team will be in contact on April 29th and there is no need to apply for any considerations individually.
