A new review released recommends that all university students, including part-time and international students, receive concession cards.

On April 9, a mostly-empty New South Wales Legislative Assembly debated whether student concession fares should be extended to international and part-time students. The debate was triggered by a petition started by the SRC and SUPRA late last year when it reached 20,000 signatures in March.
With USyd approving just 117 travel concession applications under Transport NSW’s exemptions for disabled part-time students between 2019 – 2023, concerns are being raised over NSW universities’ opaque guidance on accessing the concessions.
NSW Minister for Transport Jo Haylen has released a response to the ‘Fair Fairs’ petition which signals that the government will not change their policy on concession cards for part time and international students.
The City of Sydney council passed a motion on April 8th in support of the campaign to get international and part time students concession opal cards as pressure mounts on the NSW government from student organisations, universities, and MPs to legislate the policy in the upcoming budget.
A SRC and SUPRA e-petition to expand travel concession card access to part time and international students has reached the required 20,000 signatures to be tabled for Parliamentary debate on May 9th at 4pm.
