The Campus Access Policy (CAP), introduced on June 27th, is bad news for free speech. Mark Scott’s email announcing the new policy as “ensuring a safe and welcoming campus” is doublespeak that hides his real agenda: revoking the right of students and staff to organise freely.

The University of Sydney’s Student Representative Council (SRC) has joined the Postgraduate Representative Association (SUPRA) to launch a campaign aimed at reinstating institutional email accounts for alumni.
The NTEU’s and Students for Palestine’s “USyd Cut Ties with Genocide” rally took place in front of the encampment, with various speeches remarking on the solidarity between staff and students in demanding that the University cut ties with Israel.
Since its inception four weeks ago, the encampment has demanded that University management “meet with us and answer our demands”, but not “behind closed doors” or through “secret negotiations.” Last Friday, protestors’ attempts to stage a ‘town hall meeting’ was ignored by University management and transformed into a public forum by guest speakers. At the time of writing, a petition launched by the encampment to hold a Student General Meeting with management is also 150 signatures away from meeting the 2,000 signature threshold.
Invoices dated January 25, 2024, show that while a Bachelor of Arts student was charged $2,040.00 on HECS to complete FASS3333, their Bachelor of Science counterpart was only charged $1,118.00. Both students were in the same class and worked together in the same group.
