The University of Sydney Gaza Solidarity Encampment has announced in a statement that it is ending after occupying the Quadrangle Laws since April 23.
The University of Sydney is currently undertaking an investigation on its sociology Professor Sujatha Fernandes for breach of code of conduct. After her “Week 9 – Power 1” lecture in April, some students in her class leaked her slides to The Australian.
UQ Students for Palestine said in a statement published on social media that “as the semester winds up, we believe there is no point in persisting with a physical camp” as “during the uni break there is nothing much to disrupt” and “far fewer students on campus to draw into the movement.”
The order to disassemble the Encampment follows an alleged “disruptive fire evacuation” on May 21 that “revealed a serious safety concern affecting the good order on campus,” according to a note delivered by ANU’s Facilities and Services Division.
The media is quick to bury their demands, management at the University of Sydney wants control of the narrative again, and students just want to graduate without blood on their hands. But we cannot forget what this is all for: an end to the genocide in Gaza, and a free Palestine.
And if you listen to the mountains and the desert at night
they call out to each other
yearning
for their true custodians.
